THE COAST GUARDIANS PROJECT

Today the Italian coastline, 8,300 km long, consists of a good 10% of ports, infrastructure and urban settlements that alter its natural conformation. The remaining 7,500 km are made up of high, articulated and jagged coastlines for one third and low, sandy or gravelly coasts for two thirds. It is precisely this part of the coastal territory that hosts natural habitats and organisms that need to be protected, defended and safeguarded.

The Guardiani della Costa project, launched in 2017, aims to raise awareness among students, young people and citizens of the uniqueness of the natural heritage of the Italian coastline, as well as to raise awareness of the problems arising from marine pollution, the increase in marine waste along the coasts, beaches and at sea.

In the first 2 years, there are 280 schools, almost 11 thousand students and more than a thousand teachers who have actively participated throughout Italy, collecting more than 105 thousand scientific data on Mediterranean biodiversity, marine waste, pollution, and other environmental indicators.
Guardians of the Coast and digital citizen science

Guardiani della Costa is a real educational project that is part of the educational path of high schools. In order to make the most of all its potential, digital resources such as the reserved area of the website and the free App are made available. These tools will allow hundreds of teachers and thousands of students from all over Italy to access methods of investigation and study of the coast, share the results and become de facto guardians of a stretch of coast and sea of their country. Guardiani della Costa embraces the philosophy of citizen science - or citizens' science - by proposing a series of initiatives to responsibly involve the public in scientific activities.
