Professor Bruno Siciliano, Editor  together with Oussama Khatib of the Springer Handbook of Robotics, reference manual for robotics at international level, talks about the results of the dissemination of the second edition published in October 2016 and other projects that followed. In the article, the various projects started, the projects in progress and the news: Robotics Goes Mooc and the new one, soon to be launched, National Institute of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence.

Here are some excerpts.

"The first edition of Springer Handbook of Robotics, released in 2008, was a novelty in the field publishing scene because up to that moment, a work about all the scientific aspects of the discipline was missing; and when we thought of a second edition, we did it imagined only a simple updating but to expand all the existing topics.

The high number of downloads (more than 2 million for the second edition only) was the confirmation of the success of the editorial choice, a choice that was appreciated and recognized both by readers who approached the subject for the first time, and by those who were looking for the latest developments  in robotics. For both categories of scholars, the volume as it was re-edited with rich multimedia content, has reached wide acceptance despite the availability of other sector manuals.". (..)

"The web learning platform of the University of Naples Federico II, Federica.eu, is the most active in Italy , as explained by the Corriere della Sera in a November 2016 article.
Federica.eu has signed an agreement with Springer Nature, for a new publishing / multimedia program called MOOC & BOOK which aims to publish books, ex novo, providing web support.". (..)

"The innovative vision of the concept of physical AI has led the Italian robotics community to join together in a structure that was missing, the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines (I-RIM). Its  launch will be in conjunction with the Maker Faire event Europe in Rome next October, in order to inform the general public about the realities and competitiveness of Italian robotics.".
